3D Scanner
WELCOME TO KARLA R MCDONALD DDS
Dr. Karla McDonald uses a 3D scanner in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, to help diagnose several types of oral health issues. The scanner also allows her to monitor a patient’s progress after treatment and keep an eye on issues such as unerupted wisdom teeth. The scanner produces clear images in seconds that she can share with other dental professionals collaborating with her.
Many patients have preferred Dr. McDonald to use a 3D scanner rather than have impressions made of their teeth and gums. Considering that patients need to sit for several minutes with impression clay in their mouths, this preference is easy to understand.
Why You Might Need a Three-Dimensional Image
Dr. McDonald sometimes needs to see the inside of a tooth to determine if its roots are healthy. In other situations, she cannot diagnose a condition based on a visual inspection alone. Below are several common scenarios where obtaining images with a 3D scanner is especially useful.
- Diagnosing jaw pain and starting treatment for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
- Dr. McDonald has recommended extracting one or more teeth.
- Dr. McDonald suspects that you have gum disease or another oral health condition.
- You are about to start orthodontic treatment.
- You have dental implant surgery scheduled or you will start wearing dentures soon.
- You have not visited a dentist in over 12 months.
- You need to have a root canal.
At the start of your dental scan, you sit in a chair with a device that comes up around the front of your face and has a large light beam on the left and right that rotates around your head during the scan. Patients must remove their glasses, jewelry, or hearing aids before they start the scan.
